Artist's Comments

This image was chosen as the art winner for Magic the Gathering's You Make the Card 3 contest. :-) It is now the Vanish Into Memory card from the ColdSnap pack.

Hurraah!! I'm back to painting :) Ok, so this is a bit messy except for the face,...but I like the mood I created.
I will certainly end up doing a number of revisions, so please, share your constructive suggestions!

Created in Photoshop 7. 2 brushes. 15 hours. I really want to learn Painter 8....and God please forgive me for my 256 mb memory card! 1 gig is next on the shopping list! :P

Not one of my usual choices, but this painting grabbed my attention and shook me about like a rag doll. Spell Cast - Sand storm by *rebekahlynn is a remarkable piece of art. With incredible detail and colour variations this is not one to be missed. (Featured by ~randomcasualty)

I'm no graphics painter, and therefore not an expert with any right to critique this, but to my untrained eye the purple nails don't fit in with the color scheme and are a bit distracting to me. My eyes keep coming back to them... unless that's why you made them that color? I don't know - who am I to talk? Your paintings are always beautiful, and this one is too. You've captured a sandstorm just perfectly here, and your ability to draw the human form is amazing.

This is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! I don't know how to express it. I know you want a critique but I have nothing to critisice... Only... I wish I could do that tooooooo..... :P I would have added a bit more of hips to her body ;)
I also like the expression of her face.

Thank you Maevyn. This is just the kind of feedback I'm needing! Looking at it now, I think the purple is just too saturated. Nail polish wasn't exactly the look I was going for....;)

I hope this doesn't post twice, but DA didn't submit my reply here:

I said, I'm glad I was able to help! :D It just seemed a strange color given the neutral, "earthy" tones of the rest of the painting, but it's still fantastic!

Gorgeous! A wonderful piece! There's so obviously a story behind this picture. Her expression says it all. I love it!

Hmm. I would have expected a small pile of sand in her palm that then might be streaming out directed along her finger.. but just coming from the tip of her finger "feels" wrong to me. Just an observation of course. But as it is, the separation between the effect, and the flesh of the caster seems too distinct and not integrated as I would expect a true caster to be into the spell process.
